Your Business Stories: Persistence Rewards Small Businesses

In late November, 2011, Dun & Bradstreet Credibility Corp. got involved with more than 200 other organizations, and joined American Express to support their Small Business Saturday efforts. We talked with top small business and social media experts on marketing tips and advice for local business owners and published a series of the questions and answers on the Dun & Bradstreet blog.

Over and over again we heard how vital it was to have accessible funding and customer loyalty for the continued success of small businesses.  Being persistent was important as well.

Zaria & Bella’s of Schenectady, New York came to us with a start-up tale full of suggestions and inspiration. They opened their physical doors at 158 Jay Street  on Small Business Saturday, 2011 and, “have enjoyed the experience so far, and learned even more.” Here is a highlight from their experience:

After months of exhaustive planning and figuring out our needs, we started the search for economic help. Living in the capital of New York State, we figured we would have an easier time accessing possible funding, especially when the New York motto is “NY is open for Business”. Well, lets say we had some doubts.

We tried the traditional

[community bank]. Their response was that they were not interested in a start-up business because of the economy. Next, we went to city resources, which helped with leads. However, they claimed there was no funding for start-ups…anywhere.

This was not looking promising, however after months of working towards summarizing our business plan and trying to find start-up capital, we were able to get assistance through the Community Loan Fund within our region. Even though we were given capital, the amount was very limited because of their own very limited resources, which left us having to readjust our business strategy completely.

What we have discovered is no matter what you plan for, there is much more that you did not expect, but one should never give up!
